[In] the name of the Lord, amen. [In eternal memory of the matter.]
We, Sigismund Augustus, by the grace of God King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, as well as lord and heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kujawy, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Chełmno, Elbląg, and Pomerania, etc. We hereby announce by this our letter to all whom it may concern, both present and future, who shall have knowledge of this [letter], that a parchment document was presented to us by the prudent Grzegorz Sołtys, a peasant and suburbanite of our city of Lwów, containing an entry of the sale of one hide of land to the same Grzegorz by certain persons, and the said Grzegorz Sołtys requested us to deign to approve, ratify, and confirm this document and everything contained therein with our royal authority. The content of which follows word for word and is as follows:
IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. In eternal memory of the matter. We, the sworn assessors of the city of Lwów: Jan Walek, Zygmunt Hant, Marcin Złotnik [Aurifaber], Stanisław Cammil, Jakub Nabernych, Adam Gros, Bartłomiej Walenty Giebel, and Mikołaj Tasymerski, announce by the content of this [document] to all and singular whom it concerns, both present and future, who shall have knowledge of this [letter]: that at our court session, which was held and conducted on Wednesday in the octave of Corpus Christi [May 30, 1554], in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and fifty-four, and which was presided over by the distinguished and famous lord Mikołaj Szebestiani, councilor and our sworn wójt, having appeared in person, the prudent [man] together with the honest Stanisław Kmitowicz and Barbara, wife of our fellow citizen Maciej Stras, and Katarzyna, widow of the late Tomasz the shoemaker, daughter of the late Piotr Kmit – Stanisław in person, and the ladies Barbara and Katarzyna through their appointed guardian Maciej Stras – voluntarily acknowledged and testified, and also expressly declared, that they sold to the prudent Grzegorz Sołtys, our suburbanite, one hide of land in Kleparów, between [the land of] lord Andrzej Szano on one side, and half a hide of Kwałek on the other, together with the thickets and meadows belonging and appertaining to said hide from of old, which hide extends from Kleparów from a certain place along the public road leading from Lwów past Janella Czarny towards Jaworów. And above the road, it extends for the length of four stadia of land, and between these stadia lies a meadow, which also has long belonged to the said hide; which hide, together with the aforementioned appurtenances, the said Grzegorz Sołtys and his lawful heirs shall hold, have, and possess with all right, authority, and ownership, as widely, far, and around as the said hide and its appurtenances were separated and demarcated from other hides and meadows of old; for which they testified that they received full payment from him, and legally resigned [this land] to him and his descendants and made it free, now and for all time; which Grzegorz paid in full, which the court accepted; and for the strengthening and more evident testimony of this, the seal of our assessor's office, which we have used for a long time, has been appended to this.
We, therefore, SIGISMUND AUGUSTUS, the aforementioned KING, acceding to such a request by force of law, justly and graciously, approve, ratify, and confirm the document included above and everything contained therein with our royal authority by this our letter, establishing that it should obtain due and perpetual force and durability, as far as it follows from the law. In faith and more certain testimony of which, our seal has been appended to this.
