Translation / modern text
Sigismund Augustus, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, etc., lord and heir. We hereby announce by this letter of ours to all and each one whom it may concern, that a parchment document has been presented before us, provided and strengthened with the title and seal of the once most illustrious ruler, Lord Sigismund the First, most powerful King of Poland, our most beloved parent, intact, whole, and free from all suspicion, containing [a confirmation] of the liberties granted to our city of Lviv, [due to the fact] that Jews, to the detriment and harm of the tailoring craft, dare and presume to sew what are commonly called 'opasznice' [lunitas] and sell them once sewn. And we were humbly requested to approve, ratify, and confirm this document and all the provisions contained therein with our royal authority, the tenor of which is as follows:
In the name of the Lord, amen. In eternal memory of the matter. Since what happens in time passes with time if it is not preserved by the writing of letters. We, Sigismund, by [the grace of God] King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Chełmno, Elbląg, and Pomerania, etc., lord and heir. We announce by the power of this letter to all and each one, present and future, whom it behooves to know, how it was presented to us in the name of the illustrious mayors and the entire board of merchants, as well as the tailors and furriers of our city of Lviv, how the Jews of our said city of Lviv, together with their spouses, and wherever they reside in the cities and towns of Ruthenia and Podolia and everywhere else, and furthermore other people entirely not belonging to the tailoring and furrier craft, but interlopers, who contrary to ancient custom take away and seize from them the ability to earn a living, snatch [orders for] 'opasznice' made of simple Ruthenian wool, 'opasznice' made of any other wool, and all wools and various ready-made fur garments, and are accustomed to practice these crafts through these same interlopers and plagiarists [...], and such 'opasznice' and sheepskin garments and similar fur items are openly and publicly displayed for sale and sold at fairs and weekly markets in cities and towns and within their boundaries [...], [using] a craft they never learned, whereby the said tailors, and especially those wearing [wool?] and furriers [are threatened with] ruin, we were requested in the name of the said tailors and furriers of the aforementioned city of Lviv [...]

Reading notes
Parchment document, well-preserved, with visible creases along the folding lines and minor moisture stains. The seal has not survived (holes from the cord are visible in the plica). The initial and royal title are elaborately calligraphed with floral motifs and a coat of arms within the letter 'A'. The document transumes the privilege of Sigismund I the Old from Kraków from 1543, prohibiting Jews and persons outside the guild from manufacturing and selling Lviv Ruthenian 'opasznice' (zhupans) and furrier products.
