STEPHEN
By the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, etc., and also Prince of Transylvania. We make known by the tenor of this [document] to all and each individually whom it concerns, that when the tailors of the town of Stryi submitted certain articles before us through some of our advisors, desiring to possess their own guild and requesting that we deign to approve and ratify both their guild and the articles concerning said guild by our decree, and the tenor of said guild and articles word for word is as follows:
First, that [for] a uniform order in our town of Stryi, they requested that we strengthen [them] with the law of the tailor's guild in the city of Lviv and other surrounding towns, to which we graciously consent, to act according to the pleasure and will of God in the Stryi church and to establish an administration therein, that is: that elders and superiors be lawfully elected from among the local Stryi burghers.
Also, it is permitted for shoemakers and potters to remain in the Stryi council in broad daylight with their mastership, and others should act for their own tailor's guild from their own masters, so that this may uniformly, by mutual consent, aim at tailor's affairs on the spot in Stryi.
Also, that the craftsman be from among the legitimate, more famous, and older tailor masters.
Also, no tailor shall undertake the tailor's craft on the spot in Stryi and for a mile around Stryi, nor open tailor's stalls himself for his wife, unless he were a tailor and had not arisen in his own cellar. And whoever of the tailor craftsmen commits an iniquity, he should pay to the reprimanded tailor and with a reprimand in groschen, and that to the Stryi place, also into the hands of the sworn altar. And whoever would omit this, as if he were punished for his craft by fault, from each guilty one a groschen... and that by the order of the articles of this craft, which by law belongs to other guilds in the Crown and in the city of Stryi, to this place.
Also, that no one dare to come to Stryi for a fair or market with tailor's goods, and with this [...] so that he would not have his place at the fair under the penalty of one hundred zlotys [...]. Whoever of the tailor craftsmen, from any rebellion, slander [...] of the guild, arose by his own fault [...], for each fault he shall be obliged to pay according to the Stryi custom. And that same tailor for his craft is obliged [...] to do for the Stryi guild [...] and whoever of the tailors has not taken a wife is not worthy to have a workshop and perform tailor's work in Stryi, under the penalty of loss of work for the benefit of the altar.
Also, when a foreign tailor comes to Stryi and wishes to perform the craft here in Stryi, then first he must conclude an agreement with the masters and the town council, and into their hands he must contribute two zlotys to the box according to the Lviv laws, and provide a supper for the masters under the penalty of loss of work. And no burgher or subject shall accept a foreign tailor with his craft nor give [him] work under the penalty of [...], which is to go to the altar.
Also, no tailor shall snatch work from another under the penalty of a stone of wax for the church.
Also, the guild elder shall admonish every craftsman brother who would do anything evil or carry his craft to the tavern, then he should be punished according to the article.
Also, no foreign tailor shall cut or sell cloth under the penalty of loss of the cloth.
Also, concerning tailor's journeymen: every companion emancipated to master shall perform a masterpiece according to ancient custom and Crown laws [...] [...].
We, therefore, King Stephen [...], approve, ratify, and confirm the above articles and guild... Given in Toruń, on the thirteenth day of the month of November, at the general diet of the Kingdom [...] in the Year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-sixth, and the first year of our reign.
