IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN THE LVIV CHAPTER at a joint chapter meeting. To all present and to everyone who needs to know, by this present letter we announce and make known: that having been recommended by the service of many years of the honest Iwan Pieczifora, miller, rendered from [...], by the common consent of all the brothers of the Lviv Chapter, we have given and granted this letter in triple life tenure to the same old Iwan, secondly to Anastazja, his wife, thirdly to Iwan, his son, with all the use and benefits belonging to this mill, as we give and grant until the completion of the triple life tenure, until their death, with the conditions described below. First, the aforementioned Iwan Pieczisfora, as well as his wife and son, each of them in their life tenure, whichever of them shall succeed the father [?], shall be obliged, and each of them shall be obliged, to pay seventy gold grzywnas for each year – counting each grzywna as forty-eight Polish groszy – which sum is to be divided, and for each quarter they shall be obliged to give twenty-eight gold coins to our Chapter, counting each gold coin as forty groszy of Polish currency, as well as clean bread and flour, milled and clean according to ancient custom. The repair of the mill by their own labor and expense, such as the building of a new one, as well as the improvement of the old one, all fences and enclosures, all mill wheels, irons and stones, and all necessities belonging to the mill, each of them in their life tenure shall provide; also, they shall be obliged to repair the river sluices, dams, and o[ther?] places around the water at their own expense, each of them in their life tenure; and we, from the Chapter, shall be obliged to provide him with material, brushwood, piles for the river and the sluice, and men to clean the river twice a year. We reserve for ourselves all the cottagers and also the rents and labor services from them, as well as the obedience to justice and duties customary for millers to our Chapter. Regarding the described conditions, he shall be permitted to build a third wheel at his own expense, and we shall not increase the rent for it, nor shall we disturb any of them in their life tenure until the expiration of the triple life tenure; and after its completion, the Chapter shall be permitted to take back the mill with all repairs and additions, and it shall not be permitted for any of them to lease, sublet, or mortgage this mill without the Chapter's consent, nor shall their descendants claim any reward for repairs and expenses when the mill is taken back by the Chapter. For better faith, having pressed the seal of our Chapter, we have ordered [it]. Done in Lviv on the nineteenth [day], on Passion Sunday in Lent, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand five hundred and ninety.
