WŁADYSŁAW IV By the Grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, and hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals, Elected Grand Tsar of Muscovy, etc. etc. etc. We hereby announce to all and each individually whom it may concern, that certain articles written below, containing the order of the Guild of Needle-makers, have been submitted to us on behalf of the said Guild, and we were humbly requested to approve and confirm them with our royal authority. The wording of which is as follows: Order of the Needle-making Craft: First, if any master should happen to join our Needle-makers' Guild, he shall enter in such order. He must settle well with the master for whom he worked, as well as with the journeymen, if he is free from everything at the inn. If he has not traveled for his craft, he must serve for one year, that is, he must give ten Polish zlotys. But he must first send word to the Guild. He must give the Guildmaster six Polish groschen from the bowl, he must give an entrance fee, which he shall yield to the brethren across the threshold, he must give two Polish zlotys. He must ask for two masters from among the brethren so that they may instruct him in the order in which he is to enter our guild. He must also settle the lutnozne [?], that is, if he had previously worked as an unauthorized craftsman and caused us harm in this, then he must give two Polish zlotys per year if he is married. Only then will the brethren tell him the order of the art of our craft, once he has satisfied all these described articles. He must make pieces according to our craft: first, one and a half thousand needles, first 500 furrier's needles, 500 shoemaker's, 500 glover's. The furrier's must [...] have a wired eye, the shoemaker's and tailor's must be punched, it must be of such a test: the end and the eye in the kica must be free, the middle of the kica must be three hard, it must not be forged, but must be filed with a file, and it must be so well made that it seems suitable to the craftsmen for work; if he does not satisfy this, he must wander for up to six weeks, and only then will he come and must correct the years. And he must have four weeks for this piece. If anyone sends such a piece and does not want it for himself, he must give sixty Polish zlotys for the meat and a supper, and also for the brethren of this craft. If a master joins the Guild, he must give twenty Polish zlotys and a supper. When a needle-maker marries a master's widow, he must pay one and a half years of aliquots and must provide a supper for it. If a brother dies, and a widow remains after the deceased, she is to use the craft until her death and they must give her a companion from the Guild's proof, unless she becomes a widow for the second time. [...] If a brother of our craft dies leaving a boy, such an apprentice must be cleared by the widow according to the resolution of the brethren to another master for further training, and they should provide a companion to report this. If a master's son remains after a deceased father, and the father did not free him, he must practice for twelve weeks. Every master must register a boy for years from mouth to service, and he must serve four years, and by letter, where he is not to be taught, even if he gave that cart of money, as he is himself. And if he left for years and was not there for two weeks, such willfulness of his loses him the years. Also, a boy of a smaller measure cannot learn our craft, that is, neither a Ruthenian, nor an Armenian, nor of any other religion. If a brother quarrels with a brother or damages his reputation, he shall be punished with two stones of wax, that is: one [for the church/guild], and the other for the brethren, or at the inn, or in the Guild. The lots of the stalls should be every four weeks according to the decree of their lordships the councilors of Lwów, which they ordered us. No one should be among our farsze and they should not resell our work, as this is a great grievance to us in our craft, that such impropriety: prohibition of work from other cities to Lwów, neither a merchant, nor a Jew, nor any other trader, except for the Lwów fair, as we can produce so much with our work wanting from our city of Lwów, under penalty of confiscation of such goods. Any brother who would not know how to buy the work of an unauthorized craftsman, and if he recognized it on the bench, he shall be punished with two stones of wax. If any brother were to supply goods to unauthorized craftsmen, and the brethren found out about it, he shall be punished with 4 stones of wax, and as for this, so that unauthorized craftsmen do not multiply from Kamieniec [Podolski?], and from Briansk on the side of the unauthorized craftsmen, so that it would be free for [...] all kinds of bench [...], who harm them [...]. Those who do not make contributions to the treasury from the Guild from old additions, if any brother neglected to send word to the Guild, he shall give a fine of 5 groschen. So that no brother buys goods from a German without the permission of the brethren except for the fair, he shall be punished with 2 stones of wax, half to one, and the other to the lord. If in our market at the stalls one [harms?] another, he must notify the guildmaster of this disturbance. By their order they added: 4 pages of the read order to the guild, which he must report at home, he shall be punished with 12 groschen, and to the Little God forbid such a misfortune, or from fire, or other total misfortune [with beggars?] masters, who having no means, no brother should keep. [Also about wax, master and journeyman terms]. So that masters do not snatch journeymen from one another... If a punished one mocks his breadwinner... So that masters do not take boys for learning the craft but one, and when three years pass for another, only then is he allowed to accept a second... We, therefore, approve and confirm the aforementioned articles in all their points and articles, as far as law and custom require, by this our letter. In witness whereof we have signed this letter with our own hand and ordered it to be strengthened with the royal seal. Given in Lwów, on the 12th day of October in the Year of Our Lord 1634, the second year of our reign in Poland, and the third in Sweden.
