Confirmation by King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki of the privilege equating Lwów with Kraków and Wilno

Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, King of Poland Burghers and citizens of the city of Lwów (at the request of the seniors of the Armenian nation in Lwów)
Die xxx Mensis Octobris Anno Domini MDCLXXI, Regni verò Nostri III. Anno · Lwów (Leopolis)

King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, at the request of the seniors of the Armenian nation, confirms the 1661 privilege of John II Casimir, which equated the city of Lwów and its citizens of Roman Catholic, Armenian, and Greek rites in rights and prerogatives with Kraków and Wilno. The burghers of Lwów obtain and retain noble rights, including the right to participate in royal elections, acquire landed estates, and parliamentary representation.

[Binding: red leather/morocco] [f. 1r] In the name of the Lord, amen. IN PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THE MATTER. [Miniature with the Korybut coat of arms under a crown in an oval cartouche] WE, MICHAŁ, BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF POLAND, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlachia, Livonia, Smolensk, Severia and Chernihiv. We announce and testify by this our letter to all together and to each one individually. There has been presented to Us in the name and on behalf of the Noble and Distinguished Seniors of the Armenian Nation, Citizens of Our City of Lwów, an authentic letter of the Most Serene John Casimir, Our Dearest Predecessor, containing the equalization of the City of Lwów with the cities of Kraków and Wilno, whole and intact, presenting no suspicions. And we were requested to deign to approve and confirm it also with Our authority. The content of which, word for word, is contained in the following order and wording: In the name of the Lord, amen. In perpetual memory of the matter. We, John Casimir, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, [f. 1v] Smolensk, Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We announce by this our letter to all together and to each one individually, people of every status and condition, now living and future. Such is the prerogative granted by the Supreme Ruler of men, God, to all emperors, kings, and crowned princes, and the viceregal power given above other mortals, so that not only in their armories for subduing enemies and keeping rebels in obedience should war weapons seethe, but also for rewarding faithful subjects they should have in their treasuries laurels and palms. And in this way, their Majesty, on one hand armed with punishments, on the other adorned with rewards, they made indeed formidable to enemies, but pleasant to friends. Both one and the other under the happy auspices of the King of Kings, We, both in peace and in war, at home and abroad, endeavored to testify and fulfill, and in greater part according to Our strength, we have fulfilled. And that indeed Our military expeditions attained happy successes under the signs of the Favorable Deity; enemy armies partly cut down, partly dispersed, partly after accepting conditions received into grace, even if we were silent, abundantly testify; numerous provinces restored by the right of return under Our rule will long confess; signs torn from enemies to this very day attest to this. As for the rewards and honors bestowed by Us upon those well-deserving to Us and Our Kingdom, numerous those admitted to the most distinguished Knightly Estate testify, numerous those gifted by Us with rings in the custom of Roman nobility, and their descendants will not be silent either. Lwów alone, the ornament and main fortress of Ruthenia called by the mouths of the whole Kingdom, attested by so many obvious proofs of its great fidelity, constancy, and readiness towards Us and the Polish Republic, awaits the due reward, daily placing before Our Royal Majesty its unrewarded merits. For [f. 2r] in those uncertain times of war, cruel even in peace itself, many a storm threatening Our Kingdom, having broken against the three rocks given to the City of Lwów as a coat of arms by the Supreme Vicar of Christ on earth, shattered its swollen waves. Many a projectile thrown by an enemy hand for the ruin of the Lechitic Eagle was taken upon itself by the ancestral Lion of the same City. For Lwów, the slave-like Cossack-Ruthenian rebellion, from the Zaporozhian and Tatar army grown immensely eighteen years ago, already through the ruins of other cities and towns aiming with blind momentum at the destruction of the Polish Name, stopped with the sacrifice of its assets, and when it could not break its mad forces with iron, it softened them with gold and tired them with delay. Subsequently, when for the second time all of Ruthenia was incited to its ruin by these same Cossacks ten years ago and besides native ranks dragged with it numerous infantry and cavalry troops composed of Muscovites, Lapps, and other barbarian peoples, armed even with their own winter, and with threats and promises vainly attempted to force upon it an oath in the name of the Muscovite Prince, [Lwów] bravely rejected them and kept the fidelity once given to Us until the end. Further, how this famous Ruthenian Lion with its stand pushed away from the very gates the new Transylvanian Attila along with reborn Huns and a crude mob of looters besieging its city for a whole month, and rather offered the blood of its citizens for the erasure of the presented agreements on treason than ink for their signing, and considered the fidelity sworn to Us more valuable than its own salvation, not only domestic chronicles will tell future ages, but also the annals of eternity. As for other services of the same City rendered to Us and Our Republic, as they are almost daily and obvious, they do not need long [f. 2v] reminding. Since Lwów, located on the border of Poland and Ruthenia like a hammer and anvil, exposed to the fates of both provinces, experienced the lot of both. For when other cities of the Kingdom remained far from Mars and his thunders, Lwów alone refreshed Our camps, first located near Zborów, then near the town of Berestechko, the former from afar with supplied provisions, and the latter with wagons for transporting war machines in time it supported; and most importantly – when the resources of the Kingdom were strained and diminished by constant burdens of wars, Lwów itself several times came to help and filled the gaps of the public treasury with contribution money; through this its immediate generosity, the starving army, freed from the bonds in which it entangled itself of its own free will due to unpaid wages, moved with a free step to the defense of the Fatherland. These therefore rare and extraordinary merits of the City of Lwów required from Us rare and extraordinary honors, so that we might finally crown its so many and great virtues with Our royal hand. Therefore, from the fullness of Our royal power and with the consent of all Estates of the Kingdom gathered at the General Sejm in Warsaw, the same City of Lwów and all its citizens and inhabitants of the Roman Catholic, Armenian, and Greek rite (provided that according to the laws and custom of the same city they are legally bound and devoted to Us and Our Successors by an oath of fidelity), and their legal descendants and children to be born in subsequent generations, all together and each one individually, without any exception, as well as the whole City, in the rights, liberties, and prerogatives of the Cities of Kraków and Wilno (as far as it concerns rights, liberties, and titles of nobility) we equate, [f. 3r] assimilate and with the same prerogatives, which the mentioned Cities of Kraków and Wilno hitherto enjoy, so that they may enjoy and eternally use, we sanction, establish, and declare. By the power of which equalization and admission to the rights and prerogatives of the Knightly Estate, the mentioned Lwów Citizens will have full and every right and possibility: to participate in the election of the Most Serene Kings of Poland through two chosen and designated for this from the council magistracy and to sign under it; to have a place and voice at General and Particular Sejms of the Kingdom; to greet and bid farewell to the Most Serene Kings of Poland reigning each time together with the Land Envoys by kissing the royal hand; to buy, acquire, and after the pattern of the Polish Nobility (with full preservation of the burdens of the Republic) possess landed estates, both in the Kingdom and lands annexed to it, as well as in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, by hereditary, mortgage, or any other permitted and legal contract, and again to sell or mortgage these estates, or in any other way permitted by law to dispose of them; and all other things, even if not mentioned here, but recognized as mentioned, by the right and prerogative of the Cities of Kraków and Wilno equal and having no difference, without anyone's opposition and obstacle to do, treat, and perform. Through the Constitution of the Kingdom passed at the General Sejm in the Year of the Lord 1659 and this Our Diploma regarding the above (in nothing, however, to the old laws, prerogatives, and immunities [f. 3v] serving the City of Lwów by this letter failing). In faith and clearer testimony of which we signed this Diploma with Our hand and ordered to strengthen with the seal of Our Royal Majesty. Given in Warsaw at the General Sejm of the Kingdom on the 30th day of May in the Year of the Lord 1661, of Our reign in Poland the 11th, and in Sweden the 12th year. Present the Most Reverend, Reverend, Most Illustrious, Most Magnificent, Venerable, Magnificent and Noble: Wacław Count of Leszno, Archbishop of Gniezno, born legate, Primate of the Kingdom and first prince; Jan Tarnowski, Archbishop of Lwów; Andrzej Trzebicki of Kraków, Prince of Siewierz; Kazimierz Florian Prince of Klewan Czartoryski of Włocławek and Pomerania; Jan Dowgiałło Zawisza of Wilno; Wojciech Tolibowski of Poznań; Jan Gembicki of Płock; Jan Stefan Wydżga of Warmia and Sambia; Mikołaj of Prażmów Prażmowski of Łuck and Brześć, Grand Chancellor of the Crown; Adam Kos of Chełmno and Pomesania; Stanisław Sarnowski of Przemyśl; Bonawentura Leżeński of Chełm; Tomasz Ujejski of Kiev; Jerzy Białłozor of Smolensk – bishops; Stanisław of Potok in Podhajce Potocki of Kraków, Grand Hetman of the Crown; Karol Grudziński of Poznań; Paweł Jan Sapieha of Wilno, Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; Piotr of Bnin Opaliński of Kalisz; Władysław Count of Leszno of Łęczyca; Jan of Zamość Zamoyski of Sandomierz; Jerzy Chlebowicz, General Starosta of Samogitia; Hieronim Wierzbowski of Sieradz; Aleksander Stanisław of Bełżec Bełżecki of Podolia; Jan of Szczekarzewice Tarło of Lublin; Jan Kos of Chełmno; Dymitr Janusz Korybut Prince of Wiśniowiec and Zbaraż of Bełz; Andrzej Count of Leszno of Dorpat; Mikołaj Pac of Trakai; Stefan of Czarnca Czarniecki of the Ruthenian lands; Andrzej of Potok Potocki of Bracław; Stanisław Bieniewski of Chernihiv; Stanisław Sarbiewski of Masovia – voivodes; Stanisław of Popowo Witowski of Sandomierz; Jan of Pieskowa Skała Wielopolski of Wojnicz; Aleksander Sielski of Gniezno; Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro of Lwów; Andrzej Przyjemski of Chełmno; Jan Franciszek Lubowicki of Volhynia; Stanisław Sawicki of Brześć; Mikołaj Bieganowski of Kamieniec – castellans; Jerzy Count of Wiśnicz Lubomirski, Grand Marshal of the Crown and Field Hetman of the Crown; Krzysztof [f. 4r] of Bakszty Zawisza, Marshal of the GDL; Krzysztof Pac, Chancellor of the GDL; Jan Kazimierz of Krasne Krasiński, Grand Treasurer of the Crown; Łukasz of Bnin Opaliński, Court Marshal of the Crown; Teodor Lacki, Court Marshal of the GDL; Wojciech of Pilica Koryciński, Grand Secretary of the Crown; Andrzej Olszowski, Provost of Poznań; Andrzej Morsztyn – Crown Referendaries; Cyprian Paweł Brzostowski, Referendary of the GDL; Teodor Dönhoff, Chamberlain of the Crown; Feliks Pac, Chamberlain of the GDL; Walerian Stanisław Judycki, Archdeacon of Wilno, Scribe of the GDL; Andrzej Miastkowski, Abbot of Przemyśl, Greater Regent; Jan Gniński, Chamberlain of Pomerania, Lesser Regent of the Crown Chancellery; Michał Kazimierz Prince of Ołyka and Nieśwież Radziwiłł, Cupbearer of the GDL, Marshal of the Sejm; Władysław of Nagłowice Rey, Court Treasurer of the Crown, Starosta of Nowy Korczyn; Władysław Lubowiecki, Land Judge of Kraków; Remigian of Otok Zaleski, Cupbearer of Poznań; Jan Klemens of Ruszcza Branicki, Pantler of the Crown; Stanisław Kożuchowski, Pantler of Kalisz; Wacław Count of Leszno, Carver of the Crown; Krzysztof Sęgocki, Standard-bearer of Poznań; Hilary Crysz, Chamberlain of Wilno; Adam Kotowicz, Scribe of the GDL; Marcin Dębicki, Standard-bearer of Sandomierz; Ignacy Michałowski, Starosta of Krzepice; Jan Chrapowicki, Standard-bearer of Smolensk; Andrzej Potocki, Starosta of Halicz; Kazimierz Zapolski, Pantler of Brześć; Florian Orchowski, Pantler of Chełm; Stefan Ledóchowski, Chamberlain of Krzemieniec; Wojciech Miaskowski, Standard-bearer of Nowogródek; Stanisław Widlica Domaszewski, Starosta of Łuków; Wojciech Tomisławski; Adrian Lasocki, Pantler of Wyszogród; Ewariusz Jan of Bełżec Bełżecki, Starosta of Wyszogród and Our Chamber Scribe; Kazimierz Cieciszowski, Standard-bearer of Liw; Bogusław Gocłowski, Judge of the Nur land; Wojciech Mleczko, Starosta of Mielnik; Mikołaj Żabicki, Chamberlain of Gostyń; Jakub Zboiński, Judge of the Dobrzyń land and many other nobles and inhabitants of the Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania gathered at the present Sejm of the Kingdom in Warsaw. Reading notes

Parchment document in the form of a libellus (a booklet of 4 parchment leaves in a red leather/morocco binding). On f. 1r, a magnificent painted colorful royal coat of arms of the Korybut Wiśniowiecki family topped with a crown.
