MICHAEL By the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlasie, Smolensk, Severia, and Chernihiv. [In the initial M, an eagle in a crown with the Korybut coat of arms on its breast] We hereby announce by this letter [...], to whom it may concern. There has been presented to us [His/Her Lordship ...] from our Lwów chancellery, signed by the hand of the Soviet scribe and sealed with the seal of the same office, containing the consent of certain points of the elders of the Lwów shoemakers' guild, signed by the hand of the well-born Jan Mniszek, our Lwów Starosta, and sealed with a seal; and it was petitioned to us in the name of the elders and juniors of the same guild that we confirm it with our royal authority, which consent word for word reads as follows: Jan of Wielkie Kończyce Mniszek, General Starosta of Lwów, Gliniany, etc. Known to all and each individually, both to the castle and municipal offices of Lwów, and to people of all estates, now and in the future living, by this my letter I make it known that whereas the shoemakers' guild of the city, of both nations – Polish and Ruthenian united, [to the lords subject ...] making the good altars elevated, themselves in their craft to good order, benefit, and convenience of all in this city having a not insignificant part, suffer great hindrance from the non-guild craftsmen (partacze). Which not only requires prevention, but it is also highly appropriate that you establish guilds in cities in their orders. Therefore, although until now on the castle jurisdiction [...] non-guild craftsmen not belonging to the guild, both previously and currently living on the castle jurisdiction, this craft was free, however, because such [...] non-guild craftsmen cause no small [...] in the craft and proceeding in non-guild work, bring great hindrance and ruin to the guild. Therefore, for better order and peace, in which all good rests, so that not only the destructive, but also [...] on the castle jurisdiction Christians, as well as those subject to my care, not to allow and in everything to protect the burghers with my rights and in the craft of honesty [...], manufacturing and selling their products not [...], so that the Lwów municipal guild of any [...] never to defend or replace any of them. [Having? ...] and indeed, if one, more or less of them were found, knowing about the guild of Lwów burghers of any [...], I give all power and allow these masters of mine to take, seize, sequester these miserable non-guild craftsmen and their products, both on the castle jurisdiction and on noble and ecclesiastical estates. And for their capture, at every call of the guild, the Lwów burgrave office has and should always provide castle assistance, and monetary fines from such non-guild craftsmen are to be [collected] for guild needs. Whoever of these non-guild craftsmen would attempt to perform this craft, both two and each individually, should not have protection. [...] not to protect, not to defend, only stipulating that the shoemakers' guild, committing itself to this for a year [...], on every ember days (suche dni) shall deliver on carts to the castle four lortuchy of lizard-skin leather. Whoever of the non-guild craftsmen would like to join the shoemakers' guild, at the beginning of the first acquaintance must pay fifteen zlotys to the guild treasury, and then should fulfill all duties according to the articles and order of the same guild, pay, show a certificate of his birth and release, and in everything act like guild brothers. Stipulating at the same time this point, that no one, neither from among the non-guild craftsmen nor the guild members, shall sell products of this craft in the suburbs – neither on the castle jurisdiction nor in other places – but in the municipal stalls together with others, under penalty of the designated place. Which this consent of mine, so that according to my most serene Lwów starostas it may be eternally and most steadily kept, in nothing ever violated, but that in all points it may fully preserve its power, [...] under penalty of one hundred red zlotys for anyone who would dare to oppose it, [...] to have the noble approval and confirmation of His Royal Majesty and my own. For which and for faith I sign with my own hand by my seal. Given in [Jezupol? / Lwów?] [...] In the Year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy-three: Jan Mniszek, Starosta of Lwów. Place of the seal. We therefore, Michael, King, inclining to the request brought in the name of the said Lwów shoemakers' guild, approve the above-described consent of our Lwów Starosta in all points, clauses, and articles, changing nothing, as well as by this our letter and privilege, as far as the law allows, we approve, [...], we wish to preserve and consider binding for eternal times. And for better faith and authority, by the signature of our hand, we ordered the royal seal to be affixed. Given in Warsaw, on the 12th day of July in the Year of our Lord 1673, the fourth year of our reign. Michael, King [by his own hand] [Chancellery note in the bottom right corner:] Confirmation of the consent of the Lwów shoemakers' guild [Seal:] [On silk/hemp cords in a tin box hangs the great royal seal of red wax with the coat of arms of the Republic under a crown and a peripheral inscription] [Verso:] [Clean, visible cut in the parchment for the seal cords]
