[P. 2]
My Most Gracious Mr. Forbes,
my Most Gracious Sir and Benefactor!
At the first opportunity, I am sending a letter to Your Grace regarding this debt. I have spoken with Mr. Piotr, for he will already pay off this debt, as will my Brother, since Mr. Piotr gave my Brother money, that [...] he paid him off, having bought oxen, sold them, and will again make satisfaction [...] of his. And I ask you as my Benefactor to help me in this [...] of this time, so that I too may be able to pay off [...] to you. Mr. Donik Axetowicz is my guarantor and has given a ready membrane [promissory note] for himself in the presence of Mr. Piotr, and Mr. Piotr is a signed witness on the membrane. So I am sending this

membrane through Mr. Jon, and I ask Your Grace, that you – if it be Your Grace's favor – give me goods for 500 lion thalers. Indeed, Mr. Axetowicz and Mr. Jon have given their good word in this, and I shall be obliged to return the thalers [...] by St. James's Day in the year 1688 with gratitude, for I have a way to do so, as I have made hay and want to collect oxen for the winter [...], I will give them to Mr. Donik, so that he may return these [...] thalers to Your Grace. If it be Your Grace's favor to give them to me, then let Your Grace give me: a quarter of crimson and a quarter of navy blue broadcloth, and a quarter of violet, and a quarter of purple, a piece of parrot-colored kromras, and a piece of red kromras, and a piece of azure, and a piece of [...] coral. And I ask Your Grace to give good quality goods: ten pieces of kersey, so that four are green, and the rest in various colors. And again I entreat Your Grace, and
[P. 4]
I – God forbid – will not fail Your Grace with my honest word, but according to my word I will strive to make [...] for Your Grace at the appointed time according to the word of Mr. Donik and the word of Mr. Jon. I remain, therefore, Your Grace's well-wishing friend and servant forever.
In Stanisławów, on the 18th day of August in the year of our Lord 1687.

Reading notes
Phonetic writing with numerous dialectal/borderland features. On p. 4, the day date is clearly August 18, while the description in the archival inventory incorrectly states August 19. The author's signature is partially cut off due to paper loss at the right edge (preserved: 'Krzysztof Cytwaro[...]'). The recipient's first name (Artur) is known from the archival inventory; only the surname 'Mr. Forbes' appears in the letter.
