Translation / modern text
Honourable Magistrate of the Royal City of Lviv, my most gracious Lords and Benefactors!
I have been summoned before Your Lordships’ court to pay taxes on the tenement dating from 1700, in this critical situation. In those years there must first have been its possessors and their predecessors; the claim may be pursued against them, just as Your Lordships pursue it against me. Without entering into further explanations, and with all respect for Your Lordships, I state only this: for several years I have not received the smallest farthing from this tenement. [A portion of the plea is not fully legible.] It is utterly dilapidated. [The description of the damaged, rotten roof and exposed walls is partly illegible.] All the drains are blocked, and the water turned into the well is destroying the foundations and threatens imminent collapse. My efforts to have this tenement released have been fruitless. Your Lordships’ authority, which administers the allocation of tenements, could more readily release this unfortunate tenement from billeting. Two hundred men are quartered in it, and a guard [the end of the sentence is uncertain].
[s. 3] And at this time one hundred men are there, while all the other tenements have been cleared. Debts should be paid out of the possession; but how am I to satisfy Your Lordships’ claim when I am not in possession? The building will soon collapse. I ask the office and the just corporation [for a response; the exact reading of this passage is uncertain]. If I do not receive it, Your Lordships will exercise your authority over this unfortunate tenement. I nevertheless do not lose hope that Your Lordships’ just hearts will not wish to do me an injustice. [A portion of the phrase is illegible.]
Your most gracious Lordships’ well-wishing and humble servant, Adam Darowski, in his own hand.

Reading notes
All 3 pages were examined: one letter on pp. 2–3, without an enclosure. The date 6 October 1771 follows from “6ta 8bris” and agrees with the cover. “8bris” has not been mistaken for August. No income amount is given: “not the smallest farthing” is a figure expressing the absence of income. “1700” is read as the year from which the tax demand dates, not as an amount. The figures 200 and 100 refer to soldiers billeted according to the author; the letter does not independently confirm the building’s condition or the merits of the claim. The title of deputy judge of Przemyśl appears in the cover description and has not been expanded from the signature. The tenement’s exact location has not been established.
