Wojciech Zimnicki to his wife Hanna regarding the lease of a garden and municipal affairs

Wojciech Zimnicki, M[unicipal] S[cribe] of L[viv] Hanna Zimnicka ("My Lady, Wife of the Lviv Scribe", on the address label: "To the Noble Lady Hanna Zimnicka, Lviv Municipal Scribe's Wife, Councilor's Wife, my dear spouse")
on the Saturday of Mid-Lent [April 1 or 8] 1628 · Warsaw

Wojciech Zimnicki explains to his wife that, at the request of the Lviv city councilors, he must remain in Warsaw after the Sejm to finalize municipal matters. He also provides instructions regarding the management of their garden, recommending an increase in the lease fee or cultivating the land personally for household needs.

Translation / modern text

[P. 2] My Lady, Wife of the Lviv Scribe. I wish you all good from the Lord God with a sincere heart. I shall not miss any opportunity to write to you, which I cannot wait to receive from your side. To which pain I must add patience. Now, having neither much time nor anything so urgent to write, I only wish to inform you that I am healthy by the grace of God, and to remind you about the garden, referring in everything to my previous letter and our oral conversation at home. You must know that the lease of this garden to that farmer ends at Easter, for which he is to pay an additional twelve zlotys, for even at St. Michael's he gave only twelve zlotys, and I rented it to him for a year for 24. If you yourselves wished to keep it and take it away from that farmer, you would do yourselves a greater benefit in time if you take it over efficiently, watching carefully how much will be needed for the household's needs, as it is already time to sow. I mentioned the seeds more extensively in the letter. If you did not want to do it yourselves, and intended to take up other work for this new year of management, then lease it to him or another – give it to whomever you wish and do what you deem appropriate, provided that you can increase the lease and extract thirty zlotys, so that fifteen zlotys are given in advance, and the other fifteen, God willing, at St. Michael's. Pisty has experienced this so often and traveled so much last year that he may know all the tricks by heart. I cannot write to you about my arrival for the Easter holidays, because the lords councilors ordered and wrote to me here through those gentlemen who live with me in Warsaw, that I should stay in Warsaw even after the Sejm and not return until I finish and settle the municipal affairs that are here. Therefore, I must do as our lords themselves command me. [...] however, without obedience, I will not settle it. In this, you will want to have clear information, let Mr. Szyel come. Those letters which this messenger will give you, give to Dejdocht Jereński, and he will distribute them to whom it is due. I wish Father Stopa [that?] [...] he said that the head [...], but twenty zlotys [...] he gained through mine, to which I insisted that I would dispense. I suppose that the letters and the affairs of the cap-makers and Sambir saddlers have reached you; when I come for these matters and for the privilege which he gave you to hide in the chest, I will put them before the prosecutor, who will settle them for a couple of caps, for I promised them. I entrust you to the grace of the Lord God, asking that you dismiss everyone in good health and live in a peaceful household and take care of all domestic matters. Given in Warsaw on the Saturday of Mid-Lent. In the Year of Our Lord 1628. Well-wishing for all good husband Wojciech Zimnicki, Lviv municipal scribe, by my own hand [P. 3, Address:] To the Noble Lady Hanna Zimnicka, Lviv municipal scribe's wife, councilor's wife, my dear spouse, to be delivered diligently. To be delivered in Lviv.
