[p. 2]
Most Gracious Lord Mayor, together with the Noble Council of the Senate of Lwów,
My Most Gracious Lord and Friend!
Having been informed by the response of Your Graces, my Gracious Lords, concerning the matter of Master Gottfried—for what reason he was to suffer this imprisonment—I do not challenge the holy laws, granted by the kings of blessed memory, which command that everyone be rendered what is due to him; no good and just conscience can invalidate this. Although Master Gottfried has ultimately not proven to be wicked, he has long remained indebted to me and to my regiment; I will, however, leave this to another time, and meanwhile, since the issue concerns the integrity of the Commonwealth and the continuous Tatar crossing, anyone may rightly deem that private matters should give way to public ones, My Gracious Lords. Indeed, in the violent conflagration of the Fatherland, I have observed this incessantly for twenty in Ukraine. Yet I earnestly commend to the judgment of Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, that Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, on account of Jewish blood and the subtle intrigues of his factor, do not release this prisoner from your custody, but deign to pass judgment according to justice. The Lord God Himself, I see, was not a little displeased when I received a report from my arriving messenger that my company of reiters is resting in the suburbs of Lwów without any order of mine; and I wondered most at the assertion that these quarters were arranged for the purpose of freeing Gottfried. I cannot explain myself more frankly to Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, than by binding my own conscience that I have always religiously, out of regard for the raison d'état and the citizens of this district, commanded all my captains and officers to respect the suburbs of Lwów and the estates of Your Graces, My Gracious Lords. And since it has happened otherwise than I thought, I am writing a letter to the captain [not receiving mine] and sending it with my order to withdraw immediately from the suburbs and have regard for the estates of Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, bearing in mind my great trust both in the illustrious predecessors of Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, and in Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, yourselves. As far, then, as this Gottfried is concerned—be that as it may, let justice be done—only may Your Graces, my Gracious Lords, not hold the opinion of me that the rest of my reiters in the suburbs was to take place with my consent, for which my captain-lieutenant must account to me. Having thus explained myself to Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, I offer to Your Graces, My Gracious Lords, my long-standing benevolent and obedient respect.
In Kutkorz, on the 31st day of May of the year 1660.
Of Your Graces, My Most Gracious Lords,
Sincerely benevolent, entirely devoted friend and obedient servant,
