Translation / modern text
Most gracious lords confederate judges of the Lwów district, my gracious lords and brothers!
The lord councilors of the city of Lwów complain before me in their letter that they allegedly suffer considerable hardships at the hands of Your Graces, my gracious lords, to the detriment of their jurisdiction, contrary to laws and ancient customs—namely, that Your Graces innocently impose high pecuniary penalties upon the local citizens, who are already exhausted by public burdens and have fallen into poverty. Indeed, cities should always be greatly protected, for the Commonwealth depends greatly upon them, but now especially one ought not provoke the cities, when the Lord God has afflicted us with such a grievous and shameful rebellion, perhaps indeed because of the oppression of the poor subjects. I must speak my mind: throughout the entire Kingdom, the royal cities are heavily burdened and suffer considerable wrongs, because of which an offended Lord God is already showing us His vengeance. Therefore, I earnestly ask Your Graces, my gracious lords and brothers: deign to protect this city of Lwów—which now in those parts provides a refuge for the nobility—and give no cause for complaints and weeping, which can only bring God's punishment upon the Fatherland. Commending myself earnestly, then, to the favor of Your Graces, my gracious lords and brothers. In Warsaw, 22 June 1648.
Your Graces', my gracious lords', benevolent brother and servant,
Maciej Łubieński, Archbishop of Gniezno, by his own hand.
[Address:] To my gracious lords and brothers, Their Graces the lords confederate judges of the Lwów district.

Reading notes
Autograph signature of Primate Maciej Łubieński beneath the text penned by a secretary. On page 2 at the top, an old archival shelfmark ("ad fasc: Ar: Ant: 495. 1"), at the bottom the number "L. 36". On page 3, a preserved trace of a seal under a paper wafer and the inverted year date "1648". The letter was written shortly after the outbreak of the Khmelnytsky Uprising (reference to the "shameful rebellion" and Lwów as a "refugium Nobilitatis").
