4 Aprilis [1615] · Krakow [Cracoviae è Carmelo nostro]

The Prior of the Krakow Carmelites intervenes with the authorities of Lviv, requesting them to cease hostile actions and the imprisonment of friars seeking to settle in the city. He explains the Provincial's delay due to visitation duties, invokes the former benevolence of the councilors' ancestors, and warns against ecclesiastical penalties for obstructing monastic foundations.

[P. 2] To bundle 136 + JESUS MARY. Gracious Lords. Having diligently commended our monastic prayers to the grace of Your Graces. That kindness, grace, and benevolence of Your Graces, which Your Graces have shown during this short time to the brothers of our order residing near your famous city for the greater increase of the glory of the Lord God and for spiritual benefit to human souls – as it was very dear, grateful, and useful to us, so again this sudden change of Your Graces' mood and the turning of the heart away from them, and the setting of it toward their exile, has caused us great grief and sorrow. What the cause of this might be, we again cannot know. For if Your Graces have any regard for our Father Provincial, that this is happening without his knowledge, and this is because he – as the one to whom our entire order in this province and the governance over it is entrusted – has not yet come to Your Graces for a lasting resolution and steady conversation, there is no other reason for this, for he knows about it, only that after his return from Italy, from the general chapter, he went straight to Greater Poland, from there to Prussia, and then to Lithuania for the visitation of our convents, where partly his weak health and frequent illnesses, and partly also bad, distant, and dangerous roads have delayed him a little; however, as soon as he returns from there – as we soon expect – in good health, he will immediately visit Your Graces and present his postulates to Your Graces. Therefore, we now ask Your Graces for the love of God, as worshippers of the true faith, that Your Graces do not do us this insult, which Your Graces have undertaken, and not only to that local brotherhood, but to our entire monastic community and the Patroness of our order, the Most Holy Virgin, do not inflict this contempt, which Your Graces have surely intended, for it would be to the great infamy and eternal disgrace not only for us but also for Your Graces. Take, Your Graces, an example from your ancestors, [...] stands in the acts of your city, who themselves kindly brought us to the city and provided for us with foundations. As for the fact that this did not come to fruition, Your Graces know why: riots, civil wars, various discords did not allow our [brothers], not yet sufficiently familiar with the customs in these lands, to be permanently founded, but they had to wait for a suitable time. In that time, external wars, various heresies, and the small number of friars, through whom they could achieve nothing, stood in their way. However, since by the grace of God all this has now ceased, and brothers and friars are arriving for the increase of God's glory, we are going where we have any right, expecting that in this matter, where it concerns God, we will find support, and not that which the news reaching us suggests. Which we do not believe regarding Your Graces, that Your Graces would treat friars so harshly and un-Christianly. For if in other nations and provinces cities always strive to ensure that the service of the dear God is increased as much as possible, and they bring in and provide foundations for various not only friars but also nuns, why should Your Graces not do the same? Why do Your Graces not show us the same kind benevolence that you show to others? But you oppress and torment with imprisonment our benefactors and those desiring the glory of God in the increase of His honor, not heeding what ecclesiastical censures those who oppose the foundations of monasteries or churches or at least hinder them fall into. Therefore, we humbly ask Your Graces again that Your Graces – if you intend anything contrary to the brothers of our order – desist from this undertaking, and remaining with the intention of your ancestors, cherish the same love and benevolence toward us as they did. Remembering that for this, Your Graces will have a reward from the Lord God, fame and recognition from all people seeking the glory of God, and from us, your unworthy prayer-makers, all humble thanks and prayers before the Lord God. With which I diligently commend myself to the grace of Your Graces, my Gracious Lords and Benefactors. From our Carmel in Krakow, the year 1615, on the 4th of April. Your Graces' prayer-maker, Brother Maciej, Prior of the Krakow Convent of the Order of Brothers of the Carmelites [...] [P. 3, address:] To the very gracious Lords, Their Graces the Mayor and Councilors of the famous city of Lviv, our Lords and benefactors.

[S. 2] ad fase 136 [dopisek u góry] + IESVS MARIA. Bierzcie w[asze] m[iłoś]ci przykład z Przodkow w[aszy]ch, ciałoch [?] w Actis miasta w[asze]go stoi, ktorzy sami nas benevole do miasta zaciągali, y fun- daciami opatrowali. Czym sie pilnie do łaski w[aszy]ch m[oś]ci moich M[iłościwych] P[anów] y Dobrodźieiow oddaię. Cracoviae è Carmelo n[ost]ro. Anno 1615. Die 4 Aprilis. W[aszy]ch m[iłoś]ci bogomodlca. Reading notes

Page 1 is an inventory card. The author is the prior of the Carmelite monastery in Krakow, Brother Maciej (Frater Mathias); the inventory authors considered the subsequent Latin formula an 'illegible name', whereas friars did not use secular surnames in signatures at that time. The Carmelite Provincial is not mentioned by name (mentioned anonymously).
