[P. 2]
From Izdebki, January 20, 1697.
Most Illustrious and Noble Lord Voivode of Volhynia,
My Great Lord and Benefactor!
I rely with confidence not so much on my own merits—for I have rendered no worthy service—but on the innate kindness of Your Illustrious Lordship, my Lord, which is more precious and proven than gold to everyone, as I turn to you for rescue in my misfortune, which is known to Your Illustrious Lordship, my Lord and Benefactor. I humbly request that you, my dear Benefactor, deign to support my innocence with your grace and mediation, and persuade the noble relatives of the late Mr. Strzembiowski to hear my justification, and also intercede for me with His Grace the Lord of Kraków, my most gracious lord and benefactor. I am innocent—I take God as my witness—of this misfortune, and the people who were with the late gentleman at the time are witnesses, as are the eyewitnesses who saw my misfortune. Divine testimony [...],
[P. 3]
but so that I may wash away this bad reputation and not remain under this suspicion at all, I beg for the grace of my noble and gracious Lords. Indeed, one should have pity on those who have found themselves in misfortune due to fate, and not through their own fault. Whatever you, my dear Benefactor, do out of your grace for me, your servant, in this unfortunate matter of mine, you will carve like a mark in marble upon my heart of lifelong memory and due gratitude. And now, offering my humble services, I remain
Your Illustrious Lordship's, my Most Gracious Lord and Benefactor's
humble servant
Samuel Orzechowski,
Castellan of Przemyśl, by my own hand.
[P. 4, address:]
To the Most Illustrious Lord
Voivode of Volhynia,
My Lord and Benefactor,
in Lviv.

Reading notes
Discrepancy with the archival inventory: the inventory identifies the recipient as 'Voivode of the Ruthenian lands Ivan Jabłonowski'. In reality, the header and address clearly state 'Voivode of Volhynia' (referring to Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski, Voivode of Volhynia from 1693–1697, son of Stanisław Jan Jabłonowski, Grand Crown Hetman and Castellan of Kraków, mentioned in the letter as the 'Lord of Kraków'). The surname of the deceased is written in the text as 'Strzembiowski' (in the inventory as 'Strzemiński'). Page 1 is an archival description.
