[P. 2]
Mr. Arthur Forbes
Lublin, 14 June 1687:
Sir and Most Respected Friend, greetings. I received your letter with the last post, but being somewhat busy, I did not have the opportunity to speak with Mr. Gordon before the post departed. But later, having spoken with him and delivered the enclosure, I did not receive a comforting answer, but he immediately declared that he cannot pay until the fair in Sokal; his reason is that if you had given him the goods in Lviv, you would have received yours long ago. Having nothing more to add at present, I entrust you to the care of the Almighty and remain
Your friend and servant at your command
John Ritchie
PS Please greet Mr. Robert Forbes along with your dearest and all good friends in general. Next Tuesday, God willing, I am setting off for Greater Poland. Farewell.

Reading notes
The author's signature in the source is clearly John Ritchie; the description in the archival inventory incorrectly read this name as 'Ріппі Іван' (Jan Rippie). The language of the letter is 17th-century Scots-English. The recipient was staying in Kraków. The letter mentions the fair in Sokal ('Sohals marckett'), Lviv ('Lemberg'), and Greater Poland ('greait poll').
