Warsaw, 13 April 1685. Worthy and affectionate patron, I received your letter of the 5th. I collected the full 2905 and 20 grosz Bm from Jacob Seidell and returned his document. According to your instructions I paid Andreas Knab 5905 and 20 grosz Bm. I gave his receipt to Mr Wast, who sent it with his own letter to Forbes in Gdańsk. From Mr Jan Theodor Saskiewicz I received 2931 and 10 grosz according to his Kraków obligation. His younger brother, Thodor, promises settlement only around the end of the Sejm. For the 9007 [last digit uncertain] florins for Robercet and Killams from Kraków, he asks patience until the Sejm ends and promises payment in Lublin during the Tribunal. I said that, had the fabrics remained in Kraków, we would long since have received the money and a larger profit at a better price. He does not want the gold belt. He will accept Bruslowy and Makadimow belts, but no dearer than 15 florins, and the other, Tale, at 20. I shall try selling them elsewhere, but doubt anyone will pay cash. Please instruct me. I know Saskiewicz has no money now: I recently barely obtained 1540 Bm from him for Wast’s account. I doubt he will fulfil his obligation here; he has little stock. I visit him daily. The Jewish merchants pay very little. They always postpone to the last moment, though I often remind them their time has passed and I am instructed not to stay longer. I cannot obtain everything; they pay only small amounts. I shall try to convert everything into Bm and send it as ordered. Most current coin received has been delivered under Wast’s instructions, and I am to receive Bm back from him. Good coin is scarce here [rate unread]. I cannot get reliable information on Turkish goods prices; I hear saffian leather costs 66 florins [further notation uncertain]. [Passage about Gardin and a payment unread.] I can sell silk to no one except Naftalowicz’s brother: 32 [units] at 64 florins. I would willingly finish quickly to reach Kraków before the holidays, but fear I must remain until the Sejm ends: many defer payment until then, and some are not due until May. I gave your letter to Gardin. He promises payment, also around the end of the Sejm. He has wine here, but I doubt recovery of all 1686 Bm. He says 24 Bm must be deducted for 12 [unread description] which you allegedly owed Thomas Gordon in Lublin. In Simervall’s matter, Wast obtained a mandate costing 12 [uncertain coin notation]. Simervall left having obtained nothing; Wast’s letter will explain better. From the Sejm: the treasurer has been judged, his estates are to be confiscated, and all goods sold from the treasury returned. The Crown prosecutor demanded his head as a traitor; nevertheless it is thought none of these judgments will take effect [the author’s report]. Sending my respects, I commend you and your affairs to the Almighty’s care. Alex. Huison.

A° 1685 d. 13 aprill. Warsaw. Sir Worthie and affectioned Patron; yours of d. 5 present received. Know from Jacob Seidel I have received all that Bm f 2905—20 gl and hes given him out his [sob…?], likwayes according to your orders did deliver unto H. Andreas Knab Bm f 5905—20 gl and receiv of him an revers thereon, and did deliver it unto Mr Wast who did send it to Mr Forbes in Dantzig in his own converts. Also from P. Jan Theodor Saskiewic received according unto his obligatione Crac[ow] f 2931—10 gl. The younger brother Thodor Saskiewic promiseth to mak satisfaction according to his obligatione, but no sooner as about the conclusione of the parliament; but as for that f 9007 [ostatnia cyfra niepewna] which cometh for the Robercet et Killams sent him from Cracow, he prayes you will be favourable till after the Parliament, and in Lublin he promiseth to make payment in time of the Tribunall. I did shew him that had they remained in Cracow, they wold long agoe been made in money with more profet being sold at an better rate. Concerning the belts, that which is with gold he will not have, but the Bruslowy et Makadimow he will have but no dearer as @ f 15, the other Tale @ f 20. I shall trye besyd others if I can get them sold, but I doubt if any will give readie money. What you think requisit therein inform me in the next to me. I know that this Saskiewic hes no money at present, for latlie I did receiv from him till Mr Wast account Bm f 1540 scarcely. I doubt if he doe anought unto his obligation here, for litle… he hes of any goods; for daylie I am going by him. Verie litle the Jews gives off; alwayes they put off till the last, though I frequentlie shew them that their time is past, and that I have orders not to hold up longer heir, yet I cannot procure all from them. They give off onlie by littles. I shall strive for till make all in Bm and direct the same according to your orders. The most of anie current as I have I have given it off till Mr Wast orders and am for till receiv Bm from him againe. The good money is scarce at present heire, it pays [niepewny kurs]. Turkh goods I cannot get right intelligence how it payes; I hear the Saffian payes f 66 [niepewne zakończenie]. Mr Gardine left here much [niepewne] upon him till dominiek @20… [fragment nieodczytany]. The silk I cannot sell save only till Naftalowic brother 32 [miara] @ f 64. I wold willinglie exped my self so soon as possible that I might be in Cracow befor the solemn time, but I fear I will be forced to remaine at the parliament, for manie of them puts off till the last of it, and some their time is not come till May. I did give off your ltr unto Mr Gardin; he promiseth for till make satisfactione but also about the conclusione of the parliament. He hes som wines here but I doubt off putting all of that 1686 Bm. He shewes is till be rebated f 24 Bm for 12 [niepewne oznaczenie] of Carya demin[?], which you should be resting unto Thomas Gordone in Lubline. Concerning Simervall Mr Wast hes got out that mandat which stands 12 specie [symbol], Simervall is past from heir, he hes taken nothing out; Mr Wast ltr will better inform you. No news wee have from the parliament: the Podskarbey is judged, his lands to be confiscated and that all the goods was sold out of the Treasure should be returned back. The Crown Instigator did instig on his neck as being a Traitor; yet on all does its thought that there will be nothing out of the decreet in anie of these kinds. My best and dutifull respects being remembred unto you. Committing you with affairs to the Tuitione of the Almightie. Sir your affectioned and humble servant at command Alex. Huison.

Reading notes

Pages 10–11 examined; address to Forbes in Jarosław. Figures 2905:20, 5905:20, 2931:10 and 1540 are legible; 9007 remains uncertain. English “goods” in the treasury news means property/merchandise, not “Jews”: this is not about Jews removing treasure. The judgment and prediction of its non-enforcement are the author’s report. Fabric names remain working readings; the unit attached to 32 is unidentified.

Scope of the edition: Partial working transcription and translation; gaps and uncertain readings are marked.
