Selling goods, Jewish debtors, and transferring money

High water delays Huison’s journey. He asks for goods to be sold even at a lower price, pursues debts from Wolff Hirschel, Janaś and Ber Smul, and considers settlements through Wrocław and the Naumburg fair.

Mr Arthur Forbes! Tarnów, 21 April 1687 [provisional date reading]. Dear Friend, greetings. I received your two letters, of the 3rd and 10th [month unread], only yesterday on arriving here from Opatów. I stayed in those places almost three weeks: high water forced me to remain longer than necessary. Thank you for your goodwill and care over my goods. Although they have not yet been sold, your kindness is not lacking. I thought I would already have been [with you?], but bad roads and water have been my greatest hindrance. If an opportunity arises to sell any goods, even below the price in my list, please do not miss it: business is very poor here at present [exact word uncertain]. I hope to arrive about the middle of the fair and would be pleased to find you in good health. As requested, I visited those Jews twice and, after delivering your letter, spoke rather sharply. Wolff Hirschel and Janaś firmly promised to come to Rzeszów and pay. Janaś told me Ber Smul is not his partner. Nevertheless, I asked him kindly to intercede on your behalf, which he promised to do. I sought Ber several times, until I met him by chance in the street. I reminded him of your trust and demanded payment, since the due date had passed so long ago. I also mentioned hearing that he intended to leave for Gdańsk. He replied that he had once planned this but now intended otherwise. He promised to pay within eight days. I shall press him and, if successful, bring the money myself to Rzeszów. I also have word from Mr Robert about the sum. He says he has written on my behalf to Mr Berterman, for which I owe him thanks. He asked him to accept what I send now, with the rest to be paid at the Naumburg fair. I wrote Robert that I would have [amounts and units uncertain] in several kinds of money, imperial and Polish, as well as [unread]. [The further comparison of amounts and imperial money is only partly read.] There is no means here of changing it into [currency unread], nor an opportunity to send him payment even if it were ready. God willing, I therefore intend to discuss it with you in Rzeszów. I commend you and your business to God. Your devoted servant, Alex Huisone. Address: Arthur Forbes, merchant, in Rzeszów.

Reading notes

The whole original was examined; the later monetary account is fragmentary and explicitly marked as such. Uncertain symbols were not converted or amounts reconstructed. The delay caused by water is the author’s report. Jues is explicit, but no additional ethnic identities were inferred for other people. Ber Smul is the reading also used in subsequent letters. Promises of payment are not receipts.
