Translation / modern text

My gracious Lords, Councillors of the Royal City of Lviv! I did not act without cause when I ordered Mr Toros, appointed by me as supervisor of the Fourth Grosz, to seize in the name of the treasury the remaining belongings of that Greek. For, besides having passed to the disposition of His Royal Majesty’s Treasury immediately upon his death, His Royal Majesty graciously conferred those effects on Mr Uchański, my brother, by right of escheat. But His Royal Majesty expressly ordered me to take all the Greek’s belongings into my possession and preserve them until His Royal Majesty’s further decision. Mr Uchański, my brother, has now also informed me that you have these belongings in your municipal deposit. Therefore, conveying His Royal Majesty’s wish to you, I ask that you deliver them to my hands without dispute, having drawn up under the city seal a proper inventory of everything found there. If a party considers itself aggrieved in this matter, or you discern any grounds and circumstances under the force of your city’s rights, by this letter I give you assurance and bind myself as guarantor—which I wish to be regarded as authentic—that I will keep these belongings in my possession and deliver them to no one, not even Mr Uchański, although he is a royal grantee, until the matter has been fully considered by the parties and interested persons and His Royal Majesty has made an effective determination concerning them. For I would wish no injury to either party, nor would I wish to impede what rests on the city’s law. I am therefore expressly sending Mr Uchański, my brother, to collect these belongings, and once again ask you to deliver them to me without delay, raising no doubts in this matter. Consider what I am informing you: the will and command of His Royal Majesty has been issued that I receive these belongings into my possession. I am sure you will do so readily, since it is more fitting that I, rather than you, oversee property belonging to His Royal Majesty’s treasury; my guarantee will protect you should any doubts arise. I commend myself to your favour. Przemyśl, 19 July 1633. Your well-wishing friend and willing servant, Jan Mikołaj Daniłowicz, Crown treasurer. [Address, p. 8:] To my gracious Lords and Friends, Their Lordships the Councillors of the Royal City of Lviv.

Reading notes

All 16 pages of the archival unit were examined. There are four separate letters; pp. 11–16 are later copies of them, not additional letters. Original: pp. 6–8; copy: pp. 13–14. The copy helps clarify the original’s date: 19 July 1633. The deceased Greek’s name does not appear in the transcribed text. Uchański is called a brother, without deciding the degree of kinship. The right of escheat and royal grant are claims made by the sender; the letter does not establish that no others had rights or that the belongings were actually delivered. The surname Toros is read consistently with the original and copy. No inventory of the property is attached.
