Translation / modern text
My gracious Lords, Councillors of the Royal City of Lviv!
My factors and lessees of His Royal Majesty’s Ruthenian customs have informed me that you detained foreign and non-local merchants who had arrived with their goods at the Lviv fair, and that you refuse to release them with their goods to attend other fairs, especially the Lublin fair. This greatly harms those merchants and diminishes the customs revenues of the Commonwealth and His Royal Majesty. I do not know the reason. If you intend to justify yourselves by saying that you have a deposit of goods in Lviv, namely Turkish and Wallachian goods, even if that were so, every merchant should nevertheless be free to trade at fairs throughout the Crown once he has paid what is due from him in Crown taxes and in the charges owed to you. I therefore earnestly ask you to release from detention the goods of all these merchants and not to interfere in treasury matters. If these merchants owe anything or have evaded taxes due to the Treasury, I am the one who must pursue and exact it from them, not your office. If you detained them for the Treasury’s benefit, you should properly have notified me, as the person to whom this is entrusted by law. I trust that you will yield to my request and release the aforementioned merchants with their goods, without creating any difficulty for yourselves with the Treasury. Being confident of this, I earnestly commend myself to your friendship.
Lublin, 10 March 1640.
Your well-wishing friend and willing servant, Jan Mikołaj Daniłowicz, Crown treasurer [signature expanded according to the copy].
[Address:] To the honourable Lord Mayor and Councillors of His Royal Majesty’s City of Lviv.

Reading notes
All 16 pages of the archival unit were examined. There are four separate letters; pp. 11–16 are later copies of them, not additional letters. Original: pp. 9–10; copy: pp. 15–16. The date in the letter and copy is 10 March 1640; a note on the address on p. 10 appears to read 19 March 1640 and has not been substituted for the date of issue. The merchants’ names, quantities of goods, and sums are not given. Depositorium mercium is rendered as a deposit of goods; the letter presents the city’s argument conditionally and does not confirm the scope of its privilege. The letter does not prove that the demand for release was carried out.
