Objection to suing the Sandomierz customs officers before the Tribunal

Daniłowicz asks the aldermen to present their customs exemptions to him instead of suing his supervisors before the Tribunal. The allegation of excessive charges comes from the parties’ dispute.

Translation / modern text

My gracious Lords, the aldermen of Lviv! I cannot cease to marvel greatly upon hearing from my supervisors appointed at the Sandomierz customs house that, claiming that they impose certain burdens on you, as though they exacted more from goods than ancient custom and statute allow, you—though well knowing that the king and the Treasury have placed them under my authority and power—bypass me and summon them before the Tribunal without any just cause. I therefore send this letter to you expressly, asking and admonishing you to refrain from such proceedings before the Tribunal. For if you have any exemptions, you ought to present them to me, without bringing my factors into any damages and needless expenses. Once again I ask and admonish you not to trouble me further with these complaints, while offering my friendly willingness to serve you. Lublin, 13 March 1632. Your gracious Lords’ friend and willing servant, Jan Mikołaj Daniłowicz, Crown Treasurer [signature expanded according to the copy]. [Address:] To my gracious Lords and friends, Their Lordships the aldermen of the city of His Royal Majesty of Lviv.

Reading notes

All 16 pages of the unit were examined. There are four separate letters; pp. 11–16 are later copies of them, not new letters. Original on pp. 2–3, copy on p. 11. The copy expands the names and title in the signature. The claim that the lawsuits are groundless is the sender’s position, not a scholarly finding. The outcome of the dispute and the contents of the exemptions have not been established.
