Translation / modern text

My esteemed Mr Clerk! I do not know how to repay your kindness and efforts in building my house. Nevertheless, I shall try to show gratitude on every occasion. I shall send French glass for the sixth window and for the back room which formerly served as the dining room. The rest of that glass should be kept for later. Please have windows made of Venetian glass for the upper rooms and both entrance halls. I shall send the locks with the other things, which will also be ready in a week. Please bring the building work to completion so that I may find everything ready: until it is finished, I cannot come. I shall have materials for the rear accommodation prepared under my own supervision only after my arrival. Please stop preparing them now; the flooring already begun should be finished. I am writing to Mr Krukowski to provide money if needed. There is no news. Heavy taxes have been approved for the Prussian war, amounting to several dozen levies. We place our hope in God that we shall not spend them in vain. Spinola stabbed our suffragan in Venice, seriously wounding him, when he was returning home after his consecration, without provocation; apparently he mistook the person. It was written, however, that he would come to no harm. He is much distressed, for he would long since have arrived to serve the Church and you. Please do not install the windows until my arrival: let the wind dry the walls. Please supervise that “Knaw” [uncertain reading of a description or surname]. He need not have been paid more than three złoty a week. It was one thing when he was procuring materials and another now that he stays on site. I understand that you acted accordingly. I have nothing more to write, except to ask you to keep me in your favour, to which I commend myself. Warsaw, 19 March 1635. Your affectionate friend and servant, Stanisław Grochowski, Archbishop of Lviv. Address: Wojciech Zimnicki, Lviv clerk, in Lviv.

Reading notes

PDF p. 7: letter; p. 8: address; pp. 16–17: later copy of the same letter.
The original dates to 1635; the year’s final digit is corrected in the copy. The day was read as 19, not 10. The attack by Spinola is news relayed by the author, including his supposition of mistaken identity; neither the event nor the identities of the two persons have been externally confirmed. The suffragan’s surname has not been supplied. Knaw has not been identified with a particular craftsman; the copy does not resolve this reading. Pawiment means flooring. The stated rate is three złoty weekly; the letter does not confirm actual payment. The reference to war is in the original, not added from chronology.
