Most Illustrious Gracious Lord
and Brother
I read the letter of Your Grace, my Lord, written to me by this post not without a sense of pain, and I considered the points and words expressed therein with gravity; it is a harsh speech that you have penned, and an even harsher judgment of me that you have passed. From time, which is known to reveal even the most hidden secrets, I await salvation. It will soon show the goal of my sincere intention and lift the veil of truth which I expressed in the previous post; to this maturity of affairs, therefore, I refer Your Grace, my Lord. And now, that Masovia guards the inviolability of the right of opposition and, standing for the dissolution of the convocation by its general protest expressed in the confederation, strikes against all

state affairs which only the sejm itself was to confirm – and why consider me a powerless mediator of the sejmiks! We are here, by the grace of God, a free people, without any subordination. Yet, despite all this, having excluded all partisanship, standing by the common good and liberty, I promise myself – God willing – to have over the hearts of the local brethren, when the time comes, also that influence which you now deign to take away from me. I do not delve into the secret causes of the confederation for which it was established; let those who have stirred up disputes and hatreds between rival families investigate this. I commend myself to the better regard of Your Grace, my Lord, signing myself
