Translation / modern text

[P. 41] From Lublin, December 28, 1701 Monseigneur I have been rotting here in the Lublin mud for the second week now over a matter that is a pure nuisance. Since it is of the utmost importance and contains great dangers, it has been consuming my time with investigations for nearly a week. I expect, however, that it will conclude by the end of the second week, which means I will not be able to wait for the next post. For these reasons, I humbly ask that Your Grace, my Lord, excuse me before His Grace, my Benefactor, for not maintaining punctuality in my correspondence [P. 42] and for not meeting the expectations of Your Grace himself. If only I could extricate myself from these local intrigues, I will make up for what I have delayed with greater diligence in writing. And now I remain Your Grace's, my Gracious Lord's, heartily loving brother and humble servant, Jan Krasiński of Krasne, Voivode of Płock, by my own hand.
